What is it?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles superficially into the skin at various locations on the body. These locations correspond to meridians, or channels and help promote the flow of energy, or Qi (pronounced 'chi') to restore balance.

In Western medical training, it is believed the effects of acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals called neurotransmitters, which in turn release other hormones such as insulin, thyroid hormone, or endorphins. An imbalance of these hormones can lead to common diagnosis such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, or depression. Closeup of acupuncture treatment.
